Bases

The RAM range of base options looks complex but the concept is simple:  

First decide on how heavy duty you want the system to be

B size 1" ball mount for units up to 0.907kg
C size 1.5" ball mount for units up to 1.81kg  
D size 2.25" ball mount for units up to 2.72kg

E size 3.38" ball mount for units up to 6.8kg

Then decide where you can position the base and how it is going to be secured.  If it’s a screw down / drill down base then you will also need to decide on the shape that is going to work.  Clamps come in various shapes and sizes and most have a selection of ball sizes – if you can’t find the one you need – just ask us!

And, of course, to make sure that all your bases are covered (sorry) we have RAM drill down bases in round, diamond, square and rectangular shapes.  We have listed here all the varieties of bases that clamp, screw, bolt, stick to, slide into or suck onto any surface or position that you can think of.

Remember that you will need a RAM base / attachment for both ends of the arm – the cradle must connect to the arm somehow if the cradle doesn’t come complete with a ball base. The simplest and commonly used attachments are the -238 diamond shaped fitting and the -202 round fitting.  Both feature the industry standard AMPS hole pattern for device mounting and are typically required to attach a tablet, laptop, GPS or other fitting to your chosen RAM mounting system.  The -202U fitting is also often used to bolt onto surfaces.

In our bases category you will also find some combinations with arms and either one or two base plates – to make your job of finding the perfect mounting solution a little easier.

A few helpful tips to help you find the perfect base:

A Square Clamp base is ideal for those rectangular or square pillars or posts, whereas a strap, roll bar or U-Bolt mount is better for a round post / rail / handlebar. The -108 strap bases will work with a square post or rail.

Cradles will either require a -238 diamond base (if they are light) or a -202 round base to attach to the selected arm.  Check the cradle to see if the diamond or round base is included. 

A Glareshield Clamp is ideal for any thin mounting surface that you wish to clamp onto - it does not need to be a mirror or glareshield.

Suction cup bases come in single, double or triple cup versions.  The heavier the device, the longer the arm and the more vibration / movement it will be subject to the more cups will be required.

The Tough-Clamp is ideal for a square or flat surface whereas the Tough-Claw is ideal for curved or round posts or rails.

If the device may need to be moved once mounted or if you are looking to mount a few devices in the same location a Tough-Track may be a solution you should consider.
