Typically a single cup suits smart phones and light tablets on clean, non-porous surfaces such as windscreens or tiles. We've used them on helicopter and fixed wing aircraft for 7" tablet EFB applications, vehicle windscreens and even kitchen splashbacks.
Multiple cup applications such as double and triples are great for heavier loads and are also available with flexible bases for curved surfaces. Think the curved perspex of a helicopter bubble or the glass of an industrial crane.
